Vitamin D

Vitamin D is important for our health for a number of different reasons, including the maintenance of healthy bones, muscles and teeth and the functioning of our immune system, which is particularly important in our current climate.


There are very few dietary sources of vitamin D. These include eggs, oily fish and foods that are fortified with vitamin D (e.g. fortified milk). Our skin can also use sunlight to synthesise vitamin D, which is the main source for our bodies.


Adults are advised to consider taking a supplement of 10ug vitamin D between October and March, as there is not enough sunlight to meet our requirements during this time. This is something to keep in mind with October just around the corner!
